The thumbnails for the vertical pics are wrong : But just click on them and you should get the correct orientation.

Missed Joe's landing, darn it :x

Re: Good flying day! Thurs July 30 2026 : Woodstock and The Sac

Bacil told me that he flew Sacramento on Thursday, but I don't know what the fun-factor was like. Long drive up there... Hopefully he had some good airtime!

Good flying day! Thurs July 30 2026 : Woodstock and The Sac : **pics**

(Just a placeholder post, hoping to provide some pics later....) I was able to get away for an afternoon flight at Woodstock on Thurs July 30. Four PG pilots also flew: Joe S, Randy W, Tom C, and another pilot who I've met but I can't remember his name. Many thanks to Joe for his help with dropping ...

Re: What ever happened to.....?

That's cool, bumble-bee colors :) Definitely flew your K5 many times and all was good. But it's been at the bottom of the stack for a while now... With my first U2 just above it. For good reason, I flew the heck out of that U2. It definitely needs to be consigned to cloudbase at this point. From the...

Re: What ever happened to.....?

I was pretty cheap, back-in-the-day  I bought several used wings during my early flying years, including multiple K-5s. So my recollections could be a bit suspect... Maybe one of them was yours Mike? Or maybe not? (Regardless: None of those wings were so UV'ed out that I ever had any concerns ...

Re: What ever happened to.....?

Hi Mike! You might find this amusing: I still have a PacAir K5 that I bought from you **WAY** back in the day! It's currently at the bottom of a 5-deep stack of gliders on my basement floor... Kinda/majorly crunched at this point, so it probably needs to be consigned to cloudbase. I remember the win...

Re: Woodstock Day Sat28Mar?

Things turned out well! No-one around for most of the day. But towards 4pm, Bruce (PG) arrived, got to meet him and briefly learned that he has a pretty wild mountaineering/flying background in AK ("quickest way to get back down"). Also (re) met Josh Mazza. Did not have a chance to greet t...

Re: Woodstock Day Sat28Mar?

The latest updates for both sfc and 3k have improved a bit, and the sfc gusts are supposed to back off at 3pm. Definitely looks worth the drive to me, my ETA will be about 12:30. Hoping for a late-ish afternoon flight. Bacil might swing by, and perhaps a friend of his from NY who's passing through o...

Woodstock Day Sat28Mar?

Looking a bit north at the moment, both surface and 3k. But I like that the sfc gust factor is supposed to drop out at 4pm, and that it's supposed to be a full-sun day. Thinking/hoping that valley heating might funnel some good cycles into launch. Smithsburg also a possibility, but winds look a bit ...

Re: Possible Taylor Day on Sun22Mar

No surprise I suppose: In spite of the forecast, it was more S than SW today. I always try to moderate my expectations during that drive down to Taylor, even just one flight should be considered a success. And there were some occasional straight-in cycles! Enough of them that I got three flights on ...

Re: Possible Taylor Day on Sun22Mar

Looks like Bari and I are going to give it a go (assuming the forecast doesn't completely tank overnight).

Anthony is a maybe, given that it's a long darn drive for him. There might be some others, Bari is reaching out. Crossing fingers that the forecast stays solid SW!

Possible Taylor Day on Sun22Mar

Just a heads-up that I'm hearing of at least some interest in a day at Taylor tomorrow, if the winds stay solid SW. Gonna be a hot one if we go though, be prepared! Will post if a consensus firms up, tonight/tomorrow-AM.

Cheers,

Re: Sat14March : Potential practice day at Smithsburg?

Things worked out ok! I arrived earlier than planned, about 2pm. Set up streamers top and bottom and conditions seemed really good. Texted Anthony that the winds looked unexpectedly sweet. And then.... Yeah, it pretty much ramped up from there. I purposely did not check KHGR because I knew it...

Looks like there's some potential for a couple of decent hours at SBurg today : I'm aiming to be there around 3-ish, and Anthony is in for 4-ish. Maybe the winds will cooperate....

Re: Sat14March : Potential practice day at Smithsburg?

The forecasts have definitely picked up. Now hoping that conditions by late afternoon will be doable on Saturday, allowing for at least a couple of flights. Totally depends on how quickly things move through... Will post tomorrow when I head out, and if I hear that others are still motivated. Finger...

Sat14March : Potential practice day at Smithsburg?

It has been a VERY long time since I've posted anything here, almost a year! Things were pretty crazy in 2024/2025, and I simply fell out of the habit. Not good... I took a major step back and was flying my Falcon last year. Just four or five flights. But I'm motivated to move back up, and h...

Woodstock : Sun18May and Mon19May 2025 : Dipping A Toe Back In...

It's been a LONG time since I've last posted about a soaring flight here. Lots of negative stuff going on (some personal, some flight-related) for the past 2.5 years. But damn it... I am back as of late Monday, woo-hoo! First things first: Kudos to Bacil for making my Monday flight possible. He grac...

Memorial Service for Steve Wendt : Feb 3 2024

I just learned (apologies, I've been out-of-the-loop recently) that Steve Wendt of Blue Sky Hang-Gliding unexpectedly passed away last Thursday. This was apparently due to an unknown medical condition, not flight-related. There will be a celebration of Steve's life on Saturday February 3rd at 1:00pm...

Sat Nov 10 now looks like the better day. *edit* Sorry, date-challenged.... Saturday is Nov 11  Agree that the forum might not be the place to plan/organize. However, a single-post "It's A Go" (or the opposite) would be great. At least we would know whether launch help was needed.......

Re: High Rock Sun Nov 11th

This past Sunday was actually soarable at High Rock. So it was a bit frustrating to show up, only to find that no flying/video was taking place.

Completely understand how complicated it is to arrange something like this...But a little more info/comms from the organizers would be helpful!

Maybe they plan to get some wider-area footage today, that can set the stage for the drone footage later?
